Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Session: New Product Development - Why is Teaching This Subject so Challenging?
Cal Poly Food Science Associate Professor Samir Amin’s passion for the culinary arts began in his youth, leading him to more than 20 years in the industry in roles spanning from cooking in kitchens to product development and teaching. Amin attended the renowned Culinary Institute of America, where he earned an AOS in Occupational Sciences. He later earned a master’s degree in Food Service Management from Michigan State University and a doctorate from Michigan State University in Food Science. Prior to pursuing a career in teaching, he worked as the Director of Research and Development, Savory at Two Chefs on a Roll, where he oversaw product development and commercialization in three facilities in the U.S., for national and international food retail chains and foodservice companies. A love of teaching and a desire to share his knowledge with younger, aspiring chefs and food science professionals led him into private consulting and education, first with Southwest Minnesota State University (2013), and, since 2015, in his current position at Cal Poly.
